“만일 불자가 자비심으로 방생하면, 

모든 남자는 다 내 아버지요, 

모든 여자는 다 내 어머니이다. 

나의 생(生)이란 근본이 없는 생이 없기 때문이니, 

그러므로 6도(道)의 중생은 다 내 부모이다. 

그런데 그것을 죽여 먹으면 

그것은 내 부모를 죽이는 것이요, 

또 내 옛 몸을 죽이는 것이다. 

일체의 땅과 물은 다 내 전생의 몸이요, 

일체의 불과 바람은 다 내 본래의 몸이다. 

그러므로 

항상 생(生)마다 생을 받는 방생을 행하라. 

●

나는 진실로 짐승일 뿐이니

이름은 사람 머리 사슴이다. 

너는 비록 사슴의 몸이나

이름은 사슴 머리 사람이구나. 

이치로 따져 말한다면

형상만으로 사람이라 할 수 없다. 

만일 자비심만 가졌다면

비록 짐승이나 실은  사람이다.

선(善)한 사람은 마음을 잘 거두어 머무나니

죄가 함부로 네게 오는 것이 아니니라.’”

그는 자비심을 내어 

가사를 벗어 거기에 흙을 담아 물을 막고는, 

그 개미들을 집어 마른 곳에 갖다 두어 모두 살려 주었다. 

그리고 7일 다음 날에 스승에게로 돌아갔다. 

스승은 괴상히 여겨 선정에 들어 

천안(天眼)으로 관찰했다. 

그제서야 그것은 다른 복이 아니요, 

개미를 구해 준 인연 때문에 

7일 만에 죽지 않고 

연명하게 된 것을 알았다.”

부처님께서는 이어 말씀하셨다. 

‘나는 그 때 몸이 크고 힘이 센 큰 사슴이 되어 

앞다리를 이쪽 언덕에 걸치고 뒷다리를 저쪽 언덕에 걸쳐 

그 짐승들을 내 등을 밟고 건너가게 했다.

‘당신은 큰 교량이 되어 많은 사람을 건네 주시고 

그 수행은 큰 배가 되어 삼계에 뛰어납니다. 

만일 불도를 얻으시거든 

부디 다시 생사의 고액에서 구제해 주십시오.’

“만일 어떤 중생이 죽음의 고통을 받아야 할 범법자를 보고 

재물로써 그 목숨과 바꾸어 

그를 해탈시키고도 

은혜 갚기를 바라지 않으면, 

그는 목숨을 마치고는 

환희천(歡喜天)에 날 것이요, 

천상에서 사람의 몸을 받으면 

왕난(王難)을 만나지 않을 것이다.

친하거나 멀거나 다 부모인데 

어찌 서로들 속일 수 있으랴?

자비로 고난을 구제해 주면

복의 과보는 스스로 따라오리.”

모든 부처님의 자비 선근의 힘은 

인연을 따라 감응을 나타내므로 

그 이익이 무궁한 것이다. 

지금에 경전을 외우고도 

그 힘을 얻지 못하면 

그것은 실로 경박한 마음 때문이요, 

또 과거와 현재에 지은 악이 서로 돕기 때문에 

느끼기 어려운 것이니라.
